In a piece of belated news from Comic-Con International 2009 kindly passed along by the PR film that also handles Lionsgate Home Entertainment (Wolverine and the X-Men), Spin Master LTD, Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products announced plans to license toy rights for the upcoming feature film The Last Airbender, based on the hit Nickelodeon show Avatar: The Last Airbender, not to be confused with James Cameron’s Avatar, which also had a big showing at Comic-Con. The Last Airbender is being directed by M. Night Shyamalan and is scheduled to hit theaters July 2, 2010.
In other Lionsgate Home Entertainment news, the company announced its September, October and November release schedule, geared toward exciting the nerd in all of us. Sept. 1 saw the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 8. Lionsgate is set to release a Marvel Animation 6-Film Gift Set Oct. 18, which will include Ultimate Avengers: The Movie, Ultimate Avengers 2, The Invincible Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow and Hulk Vs. That will be followed by the third installment of Wolverine and the X-Men: Beginning of the End, as well as a set comprising the first three volumes on Nov. 3. That date is also set to see the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Complete Season 7. The Ninja Turtles franchise has also reportedly announced plans for a live-action film in 2011.
