Cool People # 6 – Joe Carr

Joe Carr is a pen and ink artist that grabbed Pads & Panels attention with his Threadless Select Tee, Full Throttle. The fact that he got printed enough times on Threadless to have the honor of designing his own Select Tee wasn’t the only reason Joe caught our eye. The fact he decided to take his love for Jack Kirby and the Silver Age of comics to design the Full Throttle tee, and then take that idea to continue the story told on the tee to make a mini-comic to accompany it – that’s what really caught our attention. Joe’s love for comics and love for a simpler time mixed with a sci-fi fascination has inspired him to make numerous prints. It has also seen him work on cool projects for the staff of this year’s remake of Clash of the Titans. Pads & Panels caught up with Carr via email to discuss Full Throttle and his other fantastic work in edition #6 of Cool People.

Product: Hellboy – Painted Statue

File this gift idea under, “For the Hellboy fan who seemingly has it all.”

We saw one of these bad boys at Comic-Con International in San Diego – well, a limited, exclusive variant of one – and just had to get our hands on it. Standing at 14.75 inches and weighing in at 5.25 pounds, it’s a towering piece of art perfect for the mantle of the hardcore fan of Mike Mignola’s most notable creation, Hellboy.

Mindzeye Studios, which previously created statues with the Hybrid license, not only acquired the license to Mignola’s creation to sculpt a statue in the image of its title character, but collaborated with the writer/artist on its design, and the result is absolutely fantastic. It is inspired specifically by the story “The Third Wish,” and roughly half of the statue’s height consists of a rock pedestal atop of which Hellboy stands. His demonic right fist is clenched, and in the other hand he’s carrying his unusually oversized revolver. (more…)

Following our post last week about Mezco “summer exclusive” Hellboy and Living Dead Dolls figures, the company sent word our way that Toys ‘R Us is exclusively carrying two seriesOne rotocast 6-inch vinylcast collectibles – Hellboy and Abe Sapien. The Mez-Itz figures are designed from Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. They run $10.99 each, according to the Toys ‘R Us website.

Earlier this month, Mezco Toyz opened a “Summer Exclusives” sale at its online store, featuring Hellboy and Living Dead Dolls. Among them is the Deluxe Abe Sapien 18-inch Figure ($70, shown). There is also a 3.75-inch Hellboy and Golden Army Soldier package for $30. The Living Dead Dolls Resurrection Set 3 runs $180, while a variant of that set is also available for $200. Rounding things out is a Mez-Itz Comic Book Hellboy ($20).
