The Walking Dead is the best zombie comics series hands-down. If your significant other is a comics aficionado, he probably already has the first 12 trades. Number 13 just hit shelves, so the timing couldn’t be much better. If he’s just picking up on the AMC’s television adaption of the series, the massive Compendium (collecting trade paperbacks 1-8, or issues 1-48) is a great way to get caught up at a fair price. West Coast correspondent Chris Park found himself interested in the subject matter of Yi Soon Shin: Warrior and Defender, with Issue #1 of Onrie Kompan’s new comic series, which tells the tale of the Korean admiral in his first bombastic naval battle. He was a little hesitant, though, about the introduction of the character, and had questions about what directions the historical fiction series would take. Len Wein has the incredible honor of calling himself creator of X-Men’s most popular character, Wolverine, but it wasn’t until the writing duties were handed off to Chris Claremont that the character truly came into his own. In similar fashion, Wein also created a major character for the other camp, DC, in Swamp Thing. But it wasn’t until a feature film necessitated a revival of the character that comics’ living legend Alan Moore came along and made the monster a relevant entity. (more…)
